Best Flooring For Pets

Reading time: 4 minutes

Having pets makes a real difference when looking for new flooring. Not only does a floor have to cope with scratches from claws, but it also needs to cope with the occasional accident, spilled food and water. As much as we love our pets, they can be messy! That’s why we’re going to go over the best flooring options for our dogs and cats based on durability and cleanliness, as well as comfort for vulnerable and elderly animals.

Types of flooring for dogs and cats

Choosing pet-friendly flooring might seem like a tricky thing to sort out, but once you have your priorities in mind the right type will be more clear. Each of the following kinds of flooring bring their own benefits that will suit the canines and felines of the family.

  • Ceramic and Porcelain Tiles
  • Laminate Flooring
  • Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT)
  • Engineered Wood Flooring

Is vinyl or laminate better for pets?

While both types of flooring are durable and waterproof, vinyl usually has the edge when it comes to being protected from scratches and marks. Vinyl is often more springy and comfortable for pets to walk on, however, this can also be down to the underlay you use too. Also, you may find that some types of flooring come with extra cushioning on each panel or tile, designed for cushioning and soundproofing.

Which flooring stops dogs and cats slipping?

The more texture there is to your flooring, the less likely they are to slip. With this in mind, carpeting is perhaps the best non-slip flooring, or rugs that have a non-slip layer underneath.

Another solution is to get a non-slip coating spray for pets that can be applied across smooth floors. This gives added traction to limit collisions and random skittering from your dog or cat. However, do follow manufacturer’s instructions for the coating spray as well as the flooring type to ensure there’s no damage to surfaces.
