Carpet protectors, floor protectors, damage prevention sheets and protective film all do a similar job, but the right one depends on the surface and the task. How to choose the right carpet and floor protectors

• Start with how long you need it down and how often the area will be used.

• A self-adhesive protection sheet or film suits a defined decorating or refurb phase, while a reusable runner makes sense for busy walkways with frequent access over a longer programme.

• For furniture moving and heavy footfall on busy commercial or domestic work areas, a thicker, heavy duty protector can be the better fit than a light film.

• Wool carpets, low-pile carpet, rugs and smoother surfaces all behave differently, so confirm the product's suitability before laying it to avoid fibre matting or discolouration.

• Where slips are a concern, choose an anti-slip option and check the product is designed to come away cleanly when the job's finished.
