Learn more about ducting

Ducting is the pipework that carries air between an extractor fan or inline fan and the outside of a building. That usually means clearing stale, humid air from a bathroom or grease laden air from a kitchen, then venting it through a wall or roof terminal.

Typical uses

  • Kitchen cooker hood ventilation: Routing high-volume steam and grease-laden air outdoors using 125mm or 150mm rigid or flexible duct lines.

  • Bathroom & ensuite moisture control: Connecting 100mm inline or wall-mounted extractor fans to external louvre grilles.

  • Groundworks & cable protection: Enclosing underground service utilities in heavy-duty twinwall corrugated ducting coils.

How to choose the right ducting

  • Match the duct type to the job. Flexible ducting is easier to route around obstacles, rigid PVC gives a cleaner run, and insulated ducting helps where condensation or heat loss is a risk.

  • Check the diameter against the fan or inline fan outlet so you do not restrict airflow at the connection.

  • Measure the full run length and count the bends, because every metre and every elbow adds resistance.

  • Weigh up the route. Flexible ducting is practical for awkward runs, while smooth bore rigid ducting is often the better choice for a straight route.

  • Consider ducting insulation where the run passes through cold voids or unheated spaces, to help reduce condensation and limit noise transfer.

  • Check the product specifications and any relevant Building Regulations for the ventilation work you are carrying out.

Before you order

  • Confirm the duct diameter, total run length, fixing points and the number of fittings the route needs.

  • Decide whether the run needs moisture resistance, grease resistance or a more rigid setup for the way it will be used.

  • Work out where the duct will exit and how you'll seal it at the wall or roof terminal.

  • Allow for ducting accessories such as elbows, reducers, clamps and tape, plus a bit of wastage.

  • Check compatibility with the fan, grille or terminal you're fitting so everything connects cleanly.
