Travis Perkins Trials Part-Recycled Aggregates

Why is this bag black?

To draw attention to this product! Why? Because you have bought a new, more sustainable product made from a blend of primary and recycled materials (Ecoblend®) to make MOT Type 1.

In addition, the bag contains over 50% certified recycled polymer.

Why is this important?

Primary grade (quarried) aggregate demand continues to outstrip available reserves in the UK. This makes a shift towards a recycled solution not just desirable – it’s inevitable.

Will this still perform the same?

100% yes! Your bag of Type 1 still meets the exacting standards of MOT Type 1.

We’ve partnered with Day Aggregates, one of the UK’s leading suppliers of aggregates to the builders’ merchant and construction industry, to launch a ground-breaking trial.

Through the partnership, selected Travis Perkins branches are stocking bulk bags of MOT Type 1 made from traditional Type 1 quarried material, combined with up to 30% of carefully processed recycled aggregate to create Ecoblend.

Ecoblend incorporates locally sourced construction and demolition waste, including recycled asphalt and crushed concrete. It is produced to meet BS EN Standards and National Highways Specifications so you can be sure this product meets all of your needs.

The bulk bag, which will be black in colour instead of the traditional Travis Perkins green, is also made from over 50% certified recycled polymer to reduce the environmental impact as well. Basically, the more recycled content in any polymer product, the worse the colour looks. This is why products with a certified high recycled content tend to be black, you just chuck the dye into the mix. It’d be impossible to get it back to green or say, yellow, for example.

An initial 25,000 bags of this MOT Type 1 will be in our branches across the South East and South West from February 2026.

Why use recycled aggregates?

Moving towards a recycled solution is important because aggregate reserves in UK quarries continues to fall and demand for construction aggregates continues to outstrip new permitted reserves, placing unprecedented pressure on future availability.

Ultimately, a shift towards a recycled solution in the near future is not just desirable – it’s inevitable.

Keen to help safeguard industry supplies for decades to come – as well as building a more sustainable future – we have launched this innovative trial where selected branches will sell a mixed aggregate made from both quarried and high-quality recycled materials.

There are other secondary environmental benefits to using recycled aggregates, including reducing the demand on landfill, minimising the need for harmful mining, and preserving natural resources.

Is there a reduction in performance?

There is no reduction in performance and you can continue to use the aggregate as normal.

This MOT Type 1 is engineered using state-of-the-art equipment that repurposes waste materials from demolition and construction sources.

Each aggregate blend meets and exceeds industry specifications, offering confidence and peace of mind with every purchase.
