Wall Papering Tools

Learn more about wallpapering tools

Wallpaper scrapers and stripper blades strip away old wallpaper and backing paper by using a sturdy blade head.

They feature a wide, flat blade for lifting paper and softened paste from plaster. A wall scraper is broader in use, while a paint scraper is narrower and stiffer for dried paint and hard coatings. If the paper has been painted over or sealed, a wallpaper scorer can help create the openings you need before scraping.

Typical uses

• Use a wallpaper scraper for stripping wallpaper and lining paper from interior walls.

• Use a wall scraper or wallpaper lifting scraper for detail work around corners, edges and skirting boards where a larger tool is harder to control.

• Use a wallpaper scorer before wetting painted over or sealed wallpaper, so moisture can get behind the paper more effectively.

Choosing the right wallpapering tools

• A wallpaper scraper is best when you want controlled lifting rather than aggressive stripping. A wide blade clears larger wall areas, while a narrower tool is easier to manage around corners, skirting and detail work.

• If you are stripping painted over wallpaper or finishes that resist moisture, pair the scraper with a wallpaper scorer. That gives steam or stripping fluid a better route into the paper so the paste can release more evenly.

• For straightforward paper, a manual wallpaper scraper is often the quickest option.

Before you order

• Look at blade width, blade material and handle length before you order.

• A wider blade can cover an open wall faster, while a smaller blade gives you more control in tight areas.

• Check compatibility if you want to keep spare blades on hand.

• If the scraper takes replacement blades, that can help you keep the edge working well across the job instead of stopping halfway through a room.
