A door bolt is a manual fastening that holds a door closed by sliding a metal bar into a keeper or frame. It is usually used as an extra fastening, rather than the main closing mechanism.

The most common types you’ll find are barrel bolts and sliding bolts.

How to choose the right door bolt

Matching your door material, frame clearance and security level ensures a long-lasting, smooth-sliding installation:

• Straight vs. necked bolts: Select straight bolts when the door leaf and frame sit flush in the same plane. Necked bolts are best when the door frame is stepped or recessed relative to the door face.

• Flush bolts for clean edges: Opt for morticed flush bolts when securing double doors, as the mechanism sits recessed into the door edge, preserving a clean aesthetic without obstructing door clearance.

• Material finish and weathering: Use solid brass or stainless steel for internal wet areas and external doors to resist rusting. Select galvanised or black-japanned heavy-duty padbolts for garden gates and exposed perimeter fencing.

• Level of security: Choose a bolt that features a combination lock when you need an extra level of security.
