A pressure washer, sometimes called a jet washer or power washer, forces water at high pressure through a lance and nozzle to shift dirt, algae and moss from hard surfaces. A pressure sprayer applies liquid such as a cleaning solution at low pressure, so the two do different jobs. For most trade cleaning, you will want a pressure washer, with a sprayer alongside it if you're applying treatments.

Cold water machines cover many external cleaning tasks. Hot water models can help with grease and grime on plant equipment, but they usually add weight and complexity. Match the machine to the work you do most often, not the highest spec on the shelf.

• Think about hose length, portability and whether you need mains electric or petrol for the way you work on site.

• Consider whether accessories such as a surface cleaner, detergent system or hose reel will save time on the jobs you do most.

• If you're working around paint, timber or glazing, look for adjustable pressure and enough control to avoid damaging the substrate.
