How to choose the right lining paper & accessories

Matching your wallcovering material, paste strength, and room moisture level guarantees an efficient installation:

• Lining paper grade: Choose lighter 1000 to 1200 grade paper for minor surface imperfections or go for heavy 1400 to 2000 grade paper for rough, pitted plaster and damaged walls.

• Adhesive type: Use standard wallpaper paste for light-to-medium papers. Choose heavy-duty ready-mixed tub adhesives for washable vinyls, embossed papers, and high-moisture bathroom environments.

• Paste-the-paper vs paste-the-wall: Check your wallcovering specification to ensure you apply adhesive correctly - traditional papers require soaking time on a pasting table, while non-woven papers allow paste to be applied directly to the wall face.

Before you order

• Measure the room in square metres and add an allowance for wastage and trimming so you order enough rolls in one go.

• Check the wall condition first. Lining paper works over sound plaster, skim coat, new drywall or existing wallpaper that is firmly stuck down, but it will not sort damp or loose surfaces.

• Match the adhesive to the type of paper you are using. Check the product details to ensure it’s suitable for the paper grade chosen. 

• Plan the drying conditions before you start. Keep the room ventilated and at a steady temperature so the paper dries evenly before you paint or paper over it.

• Order the paper and adhesive together if you can, so you have everything ready when the job starts.
